Why look for apps like Yuka at all?
Yuka deserves its popularity. It is probably the best-known food scanner in the world: a huge product database, a genuinely polished experience, and it scans cosmetics as well as food. Its published method puts nutritional quality first, factors in additives, and rewards organic certification. For a quick “is this reasonable or not” verdict in a supermarket aisle, it works.
The reason UK shoppers go looking for something else usually comes down to what a score is built from. Roughly 50 to 57 per cent of the energy in the average UK adult's diet comes from ultra-processed food, according to analyses of the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey — one of the highest shares in Europe. If processing is the thing you are trying to see, you need an app that treats it as a first-class signal rather than a footnote. Processing level — the thing the NOVA classificationmeasures — is not a distinct pillar of Yuka's score in the way nutrition and additives are. That is not a flaw so much as a design choice. It just may not be your design choice.
Best Yuka alternatives for UK shoppers
Three apps worth knowing, plus an honest word on when you should simply stay with Yuka.
1. Cull — scores nutrition, additives and processing
Full disclosure again: this is us. The honest limitations: Cull is iPhone-only, it does not scan cosmetics, and it is years younger than Yuka. If you are on Android or you want your moisturiser scored, we are not your app yet.
2. Open Food Facts — free, open, and the data everyone builds on
Open Food Facts is a non-profit, volunteer-built open database of food products, published under an open licence. Its app is free, and for products in the database it shows the ingredient list, additives, Nutri-Score and NOVA group side by side without blending them into a single verdict. Many scanner apps — Cull included — build on its data, which tells you how good the underlying project is. The trade-off is that it is a database with an app attached rather than a consumer product: coverage depends on volunteers, and it will not personalise anything for you. If you want raw, transparent information and no opinions, it is the best free option there is.
3. NHS Food Scanner — the official option
The NHS Food Scanner is the free official app from the NHS Better Health campaign. Scan a barcode and it suggests healthier swaps, with a focus on sugar, salt and saturated fat, and it is designed with families in mind. It follows UK government advice, which runs through the Eatwell Guide and rules on foods high in fat, salt or sugar rather than through ultra-processing — SACN, the UK's scientific advisory committee, has deliberately held back from UPF-specific guidance. So the app will not tell you a product's NOVA group, but as a free, official nudge towards lower-sugar swaps for the weekly shop, it does exactly what it says.
4. Staying with Yuka
A comparison post that never concedes anything is an advert. Yuka still wins if you want cosmetics scanning, if you are on Android, or if you value the maturity and depth that come from being the category's biggest app. Plenty of people run two scanners. There is no rule against it.
What each app actually scores
The useful comparison is not which app is “best” but what each one measures. Based on each app's published descriptions at the time of writing — apps change, so check the current versions:

What to check on the label yourself
No app replaces thirty seconds with the ingredient list, because NOVA groups belong to specific products, not categories. Two things to look for, whichever supermarket you are standing in:
- Genuine ultra-processing markers.Flavourings, colours, non-sugar sweeteners, emulsifiers and protein isolates are the ingredients that typically put a product in NOVA 4. A preservative or antioxidant on its own does not — under NOVA those are permitted in group 3, so a tin of beans or a jar of olives is not ultra-processed just because it keeps.
- The specific product, not the aisle.Most mass-produced sliced bread is typically NOVA 4 because of the emulsifiers the industrial process adds, while a bakery loaf of flour, water, yeast and salt is not — we cover the detail in our guide to bread. The same split runs through breakfast cereals — most are NOVA 4, plain porridge oats are not — and through oat milk, where the recipe decides. Check the label, not the category.
The caveats every scanner app should admit
Whichever app you choose, hold it to the same honesty. NOVA is not perfectly reproducible: when over 150 experts classified the same foods in a 2022 study, they reached only fair agreement (a Fleiss kappa of about 0.32 to 0.34), so borderline products can land in different groups depending on who codes them. The evidence linking ultra-processed food to poor health is large and consistent — a 2024 BMJ umbrella review covering around 9.9 million participants found higher UPF exposure associated with 32 adverse outcomes — but it is overwhelmingly observational. Association is not causation, and SACN has said the evidence should be treated with caution.
And ultra-processed does not automatically mean unhealthy. A wholemeal sliced loaf or a fortified plant milk can carry a NOVA 4 label and still be a reasonable choice. Any app that flattens that nuance into a red badge is doing marketing, not measurement. A scan should be where your decision starts — scan a product with Cull and you will see its NOVA group, its additives and its score in seconds, with the working shown.
